Retired Marine Colonel David Smith raised about $21,300 dollars in the month of March in his first month of outside fundraising his bid to be the next State Representative from House District 28.

The total amount of $21,341 consisted of donations that were mostly $100 or less and within the Seminole County district he hopes to represent. Notable donors include Seminole County Clerk of Courts and Comptroller Grant Maloy and Seminole County School Board Member Abby Sanchez. Smith gave his campaign a starter loan in February of $25,000 bringing his total haul to about $46K with almost all of it on hand.

Smith first ran for Congress in Seminole County in 2014 and has since stayed involved with the local Republican party and affiliated clubs. He’s running to replace incumbent Jason Brodeur who has reached term limits. The district consists of parts of Sanford, Geneva, Winter Springs and other parts of Seminole County.

He faces opposition from Democrat Devin Perez who raised $300.

Fundraising for other State House races remain low key with incumbents prohibited from raising money during the legislative session and many potential challengers still considering their options for 2018.
